Insane Ballerina

"Most everyone's mad here. You may have noticed that I'm not all there myself.

The Cheshire Cat

🙀 This image started out inspired by the Cheshire Cat of Alice in wonderland. I got those satin ribbons as I was inspired by the cats body unfolding and just love how crazy he is- this connected well with those crazy, beautiful sunglasses.

When I was a child, my mom got me an Alice cassette which is not the Disney original one, and there this sentence in translated as:

"I am crazy, you are crazy, we are all crazy"

Test shot

💅 My first instinct was to go for the colors of the cat which are purple and magenta stripes. It was clear those colors don't work and the real problem turned out to be conceptual- If I am shedding my purple lines, than my skin color should be pink. And so I went back to my concept notebook while going out to buy some much needed hairspray!

Concept development

🤔 I had the "insane" theme which I liked and the ribbons. As I was dealing with the material and the wrapping it around it reminded me of ballerina shoes. I took this Idea all the way and came up with "insane ballerina".

Cultural reference.

📽 I can't mention insane ballerina without mentioning "Black swan", no one can create creepier beauty than director Darren Aronofsky.

Color 🎨 Following the Ballet motive I turned to the epic Edgar Degas dancer paintings as color and mood reference.

Hope you enjoyed the post!
